George Gershwin died of a brain tumour when he was 38 years old.  He only began experiencing serious health problems during the last six months of his life.  Some doctors thought his problems were psychological and, at that time, the only test which would have found the tumour sooner was the very painful spinal tap which George chose not to have.

At the time, it was thought that he had the fast-growing glioblastoma but a recent re-examination of his medical record shows that he had a benign and long term tumour, which could have been successfully removed.
